It has been a cold, snowy week here in kindergarten! The snow hill outside is opened and we are loving sliding, climbing and building forts during our outside time. Please note the hill is off limits before school (8:55-9:10).
The weather has turned our attention to all things snow and ice. Both groups did an investigation into how to melt snow fastest. Mrs. Casselman wanted to know because she was tired of scraping off her car!

We explored ice and snow and learned about measurement by pouring as it melted!
We used children's interest in snow as a way to introduce procedural writing. They taught us how to build a snowman using the proper steps. We learned ordering words "first, next, then, last" and "first, second, third, fourth" and how they can help us explain ideas in the right order. Do you want to build a snowman?
The Turtles have a new educator in our room for the month of January. Miss Clensia is a student ECE from Algonquin College who is learning from the wonderful Ms. Donahue. Welcome Miss Clensia! The Turtles have been enthralled with the show and tell she brought in:
The Turtles have been VERY busy making books (one about ballet which sparked a new inquiry!), turning dramatic play into a dance studio after reading the book our friend created, opening a gelato shop (save your pennies because it costs $100 cup!) and practising our fine motor skills:
The Whales interest in ziplines has continued! We used problem-solving to make a model zipline, then a larger one. We learned about slacklines and did research by reading books and googling information. The class would really like to make one they can zip across. One friend offered to bring in his hammer and knock out a wall so we could make a big one in our class. Sadly, we had to decline :)
The Whales have also been wondering more about their community and the people in it. They have been talking about community helpers and making their own! Will you see any community helpers this weekend (police, firefighters, librarians...)?
The Whales have become interested in all things weather! We know a lot about the different seasons but have been wondering about extreme weather. Many friends were building tornadoes out of straws and connectors. One friend asked to do more research so we looked online. We found a tornado experiment and realized the experiment was an example of procedural writing! We followed the steps to make a tornado in a jar! So cool.
Both groups have also been talking about shapes. What shapes can you see in your house? How many sides do they have? How many corners? What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?
Have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm. Don't forget NEXT FRIDAY (january 22nd) is a PD Day! :)
