This week, we prepared for Remembrance Day. Both classes made a poppy wreath to lay during our school Remembrance Day Liturgy. We read the book 'A Poppy is to Remember" and watched a short video that taught us about the poppy, veterans, peace and the importance of two minutes of silence on Remembrance Day.
In the Turtles room, we organized all the goodies families sent in for our colour project. We sorted them and glued them to canvasses to make a beautiful display by our art easel.
Some friends worked together to draw a picture of healthy snacks! This prompted lots of questions and exploration - why is healthy food important? What healthy food do you like? Students decided to transform dramatic play into a restaurant. Many Turtles had background knowledge about restaurants! We read a book, watched a restaurant commercial, and ordered the steps of what happens in a restaurant to consolidate our knowledge. Students have been busy being customers, chefs, and waiters! We have been very interested in using the cash register to pay for our meals.
Also, more exciting news - we noticed the seeds we planted grew!
In the Whales class, friends have been working together to make intricate structures at the blocks. The creation of a ship prompted lots of pirates to take over dramatic play!
Whales have been exploring pirate books, making tea-stained papers and creating treasure maps. When we went to the Library, Mr. Tzopa even read us a silly pirate book! We looked at pictures of pirates and identified how they knew they were pirates - they had a ship, "poison" flags and eye patches to scare of their enemies! Very keen observations were made. We look forward to extending this inquiry next week.
