What a LOVE-ly week the Turtles and Whales had! On Monday, we talked with both groups about the Lenten season. We compared it to Advent and discussed the hard things Jesus did in his life. We brainstormed good deeds that we can do during Lent to honour the sacrifices Jesus made for us. The students had so many good ideas to share: caring, sharing, cooperating and using nice words!
On Tuesday, both groups celebrated Shrove Tuesday. We learned that many people enjoy a treat on this day before Lent begins. We made pancakes - what a great learning opportunity. We practised our reading and measuring skills by following a recipe. We helped pour, mix, and cook! They were delicious (or at least the syrup was :) )
It was fun seeing many students at the Mardi Gras celebration in our gym our Tuesday. We heard lots of stories about the party the following day. Thank you to parent council for organizing such a wonderful event for our school.

On Wednesday, we joined the rest of the school at Blessed Sacrament church for our Ash Wednesday mass. It was a beautiful service and the kinders did an amazing job! So respectful. Thank you to Madame Adou and Mr. Lapointe's junior classes for being our buddies (they walked us to and from church and sat with us!). When we returned, some friends were curious about the ashes that were placed on our foreheads. They used mirrors to look closely at their reflections and drew self-portraits.
The Whales received an exciting email on Thursday. Our classmate who moved to Yellowknife sent us some amazing pictures of life up North! We compared the photos to Ottawa. We also discussed the different hours of daylight between Yellowknife and here.
Friday was one of the best days of the school year! Valentine's Day! The kinders have been looking forward to Valentines day for weeks. Everyone looked so cute in their Valentine's Day colours. Friends were bursting to hand out their valentines and give hugs :)
In the morning, we had our kinder Valentines Day celebration. We split the kinders up into groups and rotated through different centers. Students got to make a love bracelet, decorate a Valentine's Day cookie, create and cast a love potion, and participate in Valentine's Day obstacle courses in the gym! Thank you to the fantastic parent volunteers who came in that morning and helped out our groups. We really appreciate it!
The afternoon was spent exchanging Valentine's, reading Valentine's Day books and having little dance parties! So fun.

Thank you to Miss Lorelei and the Campos family for baking the cookies. They got rave reviews from all. One friend remarked, "These are better than french fries!" Highest honours.
A new inquiry began in the Turtles room this week! They are interested in all things spies. Students have been creating the gear they think spies need. They figured out how to make walkie-talkies from our recyclables and want to assemble a spy kit next week. They even cracked some letter/symbol codes that were left out for them!

In the Whales room, measurement has taken off! We are practising how to measure with non-standard (cubes, links) and standard (rulers, measuring tapes) units of measurement. What can you measure at home this weekend? Challenge: how could you measure the width of an orange?
Also, thank you to Mrs. Grant for the cinnamon hearts. We predicted what would happen if we put them in snow and ice (we were right - everything turned red!) Our little scientists at work:
Here are some pictures of other happenings this week:
Have a great long weekend! Happy Family Day!
