This was a very important week for us. We learned all about Holy Week and started preparing our hearts for Easter. We began the week with a discussion about Palm Sunday. Some friends decided to make their own palms to wave for Jesus. We began learning about what happened to Jesus during Holy Week and built a box together with symbols of each important event. We added a rope for when Jesus was arrested, a cross for the one he carried, bandaids for when he fell while carrying the cross, nails for when he was nailed to the cross, a kleenex for the tears people cried after he died, a rock to symbolize his burial and a rosary for the prayers that were said when he rose again. The children were very interested in the story and did an amazing job retelling it.
This week, we switched up our sign-in activity and presented survey questions to our friends. They filled in 10 frame boxes to answer. We put on our mathematicians hats to interpret the data.
When we asked friends what the survey told us, they blew us away!
"Spring is the favourite season for most people"
"19 people like Spring, 4 like something else"
"I know 19 people like Spring because I see one 10 frame with all dots so that's 10. The other frame has one empty spot so that's 9. I know 10+9=19!"
The children are amazing at explaining their thinking and telling us how they "see" a certain number or proving that they have the correct answer.
We got into the Easter spirit by decorating eggs. Thank you to the family that donated the craft sets, we had so much fun with them :)

The Turtles were all about numbers and letters this week. We have been emphasizing sight words with the children and encouraging them to use our Word Wall to help with their writing. We made sight word sticks to keep in our library. Friends can choose a stick and see if they can find the word in a classroom book or resource. There is a link under the 'resources' tab for the sight words we focus on.
Two exciting things happened in the Whales room. First, we had some visitors that caused a lot of excitement! The children immediately wanted to learn more about how to care for our new friends. We watched some videos and learned that the tank should be cleaned once a week. We made suggestions for how to make the tank a more comfortable habitat. We like to count the fish and talk to them :)
The Whales have also shown a real interest in sewing. Together, they made a curtain for our door. Some friends got to "drive" the sewing machine which was a real highlight for them! We have been busy measuring, making patterns and designing different costumes.
We love playing the games our students make up. Order the number cards and put on the right number of objects:
Roll the dice and fill your 10 frame with eggs. First to 10 wins!
More kinder learning: planning and building, sounding out words, playing our file folder games....what fun!
Have a lovely Easter weekend with your families. There is no school tomorrow or on Monday.
Thanks for a great week Turtles and Whales!
