The first snowfall this week had Turtles and Whales excited about the change in weather! We talked about snow and learned about the formation of snowflakes. We did some research and found out that snowflakes have six sides! Some mathematicians knew that shapes with six-sides are hexagons. Can you find other hexagons in your home? We also learned that no two snowflakes are alike because water freezes around pieces of dust in different ways. These become snowflakes that fall from the clouds (and tickle our noses)! Both groups did a science experiment to try and "grow" our own snowflakes. We wonder if they will look the same or different?
One Turtle used her knowledge of snowflakes to make one on the light table!
The snowfall got us excited for Christmas! We have been hearing a lot about different family traditions. Many friends are looking forward to wearing their Christmas jammies! The Turtles decorated our classroom for the upcoming holiday, and the Whales have been busy writing letters and lists for Santa and making Santa's village out of blocks.
This week, a Turtle friend found a coin on the bus. He had many questions about it. Some friends looked through the change in Mrs. Casselman's wallet and sorted the coins. We looked closely and noticed they had different pictures on them and all of them had a picture of the queen on the back. We learned that they we worth different amounts.
The Whales have been using their detective eyes to find letters everywhere! Some friends have really enjoyed going on letter hunts in our room and taking pictures of the letters they see in the objects around us. What letters do you see in these pictures?
This also happened this week.....reading, writing, math, what fun!
A few things to note:
Tis the season for Santa and sneezing! A bad flu seems to be going around. We have been reviewing proper hygiene with the children (cough into your elbow, wash hands before eating/after bathroom, sanitize). Please keep an eye out for any flu symptoms in your child.
As we come to school with more gear....please LABEL your child's belongings. When things get lost, this will help us out so much. Please also consider sending in two pairs of mitts as we go outside twice a day and sometimes outdoor gear does not have enough time to dry completely.
We have extended our lunch time and continue to give children many reminders to eat. :)
Have a fun and restful weekend everyone. Thank you so much for the donations to our classrooms over the last little while (playdough, craft supplies, cream of tartar, soap and hand sanitizer - so appreciated!)
