Welcome to our week! We kicked things off with our Terry Fox run - we had so much fun checking out everyone's crazy socks!
We went to an assembly in the gym about Terry Fox. The Whales and Turtles did a great job at their first assembly! We listened to Mrs. Filoso talk about Terry Fox and watched closely as we were shown some videos about his life. Then, the real fun started - we went outside and walked around the Corpus Yard in his honour. After our walk, we joined the rest of the school in writing messages of hope on the pavement.
Thanks to all the families who have sent in fall items - students have enjoyed exploring the pumpkins, beans, apples and corn! Once students discovered how to remove the "seeds" from the corn cobs, so many wonderings erupted! How do you make popcorn? What makes corn pop? How can we get this corn ready to sell?
The Turtles had a class discussion about everything they knew about popcorn. They knew ALOT!

We watched some videos about popcorn and learned that those seeds were actually called kernels. Some scientists in the class thought popcorn popped because the air in the machine was so hot. We did more research and learned that the outside of the kernel is called the hull and inside the kernel there is a tiny droplet of water. When this droplet gets hot, the kernel pops!
Of course, we had to make popcorn to test this new learning. Students decided to decorate popcorn bags, fill them, and deliver them to different educators around our school. Great bucket-filling!
The Whales have been busy exploring milkweed pods and bulrushes! They made it "snow" in our classroom when they discovered the brown part could be pulled apart. Upon further discussion, we connect baby Moses to bulrushes. We learned that his mother kept him safe by hiding him in the bulrushes.
Thanks for a great week everyone. And thank you for your help in checking the communication books and returning all forms. Have a great weekend!
