This week, we started things off with an advent liturgy in the gym with the whole school. We lit the next candle on our advent wreath and practised the new song we are learning as a school for mass "Dona Nobis Pacem." It sounds so beautiful when we sing it as a school! Our school foyer has been decorated for Christmas and this has piqued student's interest as we walk by! Our Christmas tree has many presents underneath it for the Angel Tree....thank you for helping out our community and sending in gifts. We also love looking at the nativity scene and advent wreath on display. As Christmas comes closer, we are feeling excited! We took this opportunity to learn a new vocabulary word "emotions." Many friends have seen this movie - we watched the trailer to jumpstart our conversations: We talked about what makes us happy and sad. The Whales wanted to see how many friends were feeling happy and sad that day so we made a "concrete graph" using our shoes! What a fun way to display data. Many friends have been talking about shapes as they play. We watched a song about shapes on youtube and then listed how many shapes we knew (we just talked about the 2D shapes for now). We used our detective eyes to count the number of sides different shapes have, and even counted the vertices! Our number talks have continued. How many dots do you see? How do you see them? Here is some more fun we had this week: Next week is a busy one for us! Here are some important dates: Monday - Advent Liturgy 1:00 PM (Please join us if you can!) Tuesday - Field Trip! Please be at school promptly at 9:10 that morning (if not before!) The bus is leaving soon after the bell. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers. Wednesday - Christmas Concert 1:00PM (Families are invited! Come see how cute we are!) Friday - Last day of school before break We began the first week of December by celebrating Advent with the rest of our school. We went to the gym for our first Advent Liturgy (we will have one every week until Christmas holidays). The Turtles and Whales learned about the advent wreath and we lit the hope candle. Turtles and Whales should be SO proud of their behaviour at our liturgy - so respectful. This prompted conversations in both classes about how to prepare for Christmas at school and at home. We changed our prayer tables and the Turtles decided they wanted to act out the nativity story - so we turned dramatic play into a manger! We also had fun playing with a beautiful nativity scene donated by one of our families. The Whales wanted to decorate the room for Christmas and have been spending a lot of time at the art table making beautiful decorations. A mysterious package arrived for both classes - students were excited to see an elf was inside! Our elves will be with us until Christmas and will be watching for all the great bucket-filling things we do. The Turtles voted to name their elf Juicy and the Whales voted to name their elf Isabelle. We also have been practicing for our Christmas Concert! We had our dress rehearsal on Thursday and did a great job. The Turtles are singing "Winter Wonderland" and the Whales are singing "Petit Papa Noel". The Concert will be Wednesday, December 16th at 1:00PM in the gym. Hope to see you there! :)
We continue to talk about healthy eating and students have been making good choices for morning snack! We have also been doing number talks in both groups. To start talks, we have been showing students dot cards (like the sides of a dice) and asking how many dots they see and how they see them. This is a great exercise that encourages children to ask questions and use math language. One of our goals is to have children begin to recognize sets without having to count. Keep practising your counting and number recognition at home! We've seen great progress in our penmanship skills through our name sign-in books each morning. We are encouraging the children (especially SKs) to use lowercase letters after the uppercase letter to begin their name. Keep searching for letters and practising your letter sounds! Thanks to all families who have supported our Angel Tree Advent Project. Please return permission forms for our museum trip ASAP. Thanks to those who are able to volunteer (just to note, unfortunately the museum cannot accommodate siblings on our trip). Have a happy weekend! |
