We had a fun-filled lead up to Thanksgiving this week. Students in both classes were busy investigating seasonal items likes beans, leaves, and scented playdough (lavender and pumpkin spice!)
The Turtles used tweezers to remove the kernels from the corn cobs, then explored capacity as they dumped, poured and funneled it into different vessels. Beans were added later in the week for sorting practice!
The soup-making sensory bin in the Whales classroom. Lots of collaboration happened here with some delicious outcomes :)
Lots of name recognition and writing opportunities have been presented in both groups. We used magnetic letters to sort which letters had holes and which didn't. We talked about sorting and how you can sort in different ways. Here is our sorting song you can sing at home when you're sorting!

We worked our hand muscles by grinding herbs...
We made cool things out of duplo....
We drew beautiful pictures....
We worked really hard to keep our cubbies tidy as we come to school with more gear (hat/mitts/scarves in the sleeves of our coats, keeping our backpacks zipped up, and using the hanging tag or hood on our jacket to hang up our coats). We've also taught some students the "flip trick" for putting on sweaters and coats independently if they're having trouble - stand with your legs a bit apart. Put your jacket on the floor with the hood between your legs. Bend down and put your arms in the armholes. Flip your jacket over your head and voila!
But the most exciting day of the week was today! It was our Friendship Soup making day. Thanks to everyone for sending in items for our soup. The students heard the story of "Stone Soup" and then we had a talking circle about what we were thankful for. Here are some responses from the Turtles....
I Am Thankful For...
G: "I am thankful for my family and mom and dad and food"
D: "For mom"
S:"Mom and Dad because they are nice and give me treats on the weekend!"
M: "The Turtles because they are gentle"
L: "My mom because on the weekends she gives me a jumbo freezie!"
P:"Books and my brother."
O:"S. becuase she opened my candy today. She was very helpful and filled my bucket."
C:"Spending time with my mom"
M:"My mom when she plays games with me."
The students worked very hard adding the ingredients to our soup, stirring it, and eating it! It was delicious and we are very thankful for all of our Turtle and Whale friends.
